COLUMBUS, Ga. – Lehigh wrapped up pool play at the NFCA leadoff classic on Saturday afternoon, but the Mountain Hawks let leads get away in both of their games at the South Commons Complex. Coastal Carolina rallied for a 3-2 victory in the Mountain Hawks’ first game of the day, and then Illinois State came from behind to defeat the Brown and White 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap. Lehigh finished pool play 0-4 with two more games scheduled for Sunday.

Junior Taryn Hanley led the way for the Mountain Hawks against Coastal Carolina, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Hanley drove in Lehigh’s first run of the season with an RBI single in the first inning, which scored junior Kate Marvel. In the fifth inning, Hanley doubled to score freshman Lauren Eichblatt.

The Lady Chanticleers (3-9) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run double from Kimberly Cillis.

Sophomore Lisa Sweeney went the first six-plus innings in the circle striking out eight, but left with the winning run on second base and one out. Freshman Tiffany Curtis came on, but issued a two out bases loaded walk to Kelsey Riffel to force in the winning run. Sweeney was charged with all three runs and falls to 0-2 on the season.

In game two Illinois State (10-3) scored first, but Lehigh came back with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Sophomore Alisha Gonzales delivered an RBI single to score Kristyn Kubiak. Marvel followed with an RBI fielders-choice to put Lehigh up 2-1.

The Redbird bats exploded late in the game, as Illinois State re-took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth. Amber Smith delivered the big blow, a three-run sixth inning home run.

Curtis went the first five and a third innings in the circle, allowing nine runs on ten hits.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap up play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with two more games on Sunday. Lehigh will take on DePaul at 9:00 am in the first game, and will play a second game at 11:00 am against either Seton Hall or Hofstra.
