Ross leads Lehigh past NJIT, 73-58

“I thought we had a tremendous all-around effort from everyone on the team,” said head coach Sue Troyan. “Hopefully we can keep this play up and it is a sign of things to come.”
For the second straight game Lehigh put together another great shooting half, connecting on 46.7% of its shots in the first half. Ross and Haly Crites each scored a team high eight points. Ross was all over the court, knocking down two three-pointers and grabbing a team high five rebounds. Pearce also chipped in with seven points and Tricia Smith had six points and four rebounds.
Jackie McCafferey led the Highlanders with 11 points in the first half, connecting on five of her seven field goal attempts. The Mountain Hawks were able to contain Jessica Gerald, the team’s second leading scorer, to just one-of-six shooting and two points.
To go along with their great shooting in the half, the Mountain Hawks also played great defense, recording seven blocks, led by Crites with three. Pearce, Smith, Claire Sullivan and Courtney Dentler all chipped in with one block each. Dentler also scored her first career points, on a jumper with 1:58 remaining to give Lehigh a 32-22 lead. She ended the game with six points, two rebounds, two steals and one block.
Lehigh went into halftime with a 10 point lead and would not relinquish it, increasing the margin by as much as 22 points in the second half. Ross continued her hot shooting, knocking down three-of-four three-pointers to reach her career high.
“I missed a few shots early,” said Ross, “but coach and my teammates told me to keep shooting, and they just started to fall.”
After failing to get an assist in the previous five games, Sullivan picked up six in the game, as she inched her way closer to the top of Lehigh’s all-time assist list. Erica Prosser also added a career high six assists for the Mountain Hawks.
McCafferey led the Highlanders with 13 points and Kehinde Oyelola added nine points and a team high seven rebounds.
The Brown and White shot a season high .460 for the game and out-rebounded NJIT 46-27, their largest margin of the season.
