Mountain Hawks can’t hang with Ohio

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the third time this season, the Mountain Hawks failed to register to back-to-back wins, as they fell to Ohio 67-53, Monday night at Stabler Arena.  Tricia Smith tied her season high with 14 points to lead Lehigh in the losing effort.  With the loss the Brown and White fall to 3-6 on the year, while the Bobcats improve their record to 4-4.

“We set the tone offensively with our early struggles,” said head coach Sue Troyan.  “The team fought hard and our defense did a good job.  We have ten days before we play again, so we have some time to work on those things.”

The Mountain Hawks were slow out of the gate in the first half, shooting just 9-of-32 from the floor and missed all six of their three-point attempts.  Ohio also got off to a slow start but warmed up quickly, taking a 25-8 lead at the 4:39 mark.  Lehigh cut that lead down, but not by much, as the Bobcats entered halftime with a 30-19 lead.

Melissa Rich led the Brown and White with eight points and three rebounds in the half.  Smith also chipped in with six points, two rebounds and one steal.  Haly Crites led both teams with eight rebounds.

Jackie Hiebert and Simone Redd each scored a half high six points for the Bobcats.  Ohio’s leading scorer on the season, Lauren Kohn was held to just five points in the half, and nine for the game, but did chip in with four rebounds and three assists.

Lehigh got out to a better start in the second half, decreasing the Ohio lead from 14 to eight points by the 16 minute mark.  The teams traded points for the next eight minutes before Ohio broke free and cruised to the victory.

Crites ended the game with a career high 11 rebounds and recorded three blocks for the second straight game.  Rich added 11 points and Erica Prosser and Kaela Pearce contributed with seven points a piece.

Hiebert was the leading scorer in the game with 15 points and Jennifer Bushby added another 12 points and six rebounds.  After struggling to find their shot in the first half, the Bobcats hit 48.4% of their shots in the second.

The numbers were close for both teams, but the big difference was the bench scoring.  Lehigh received just 10 points from its bench, while Ohio had 37 points, led by Hiebert.

The Brown and White return to action on December 19, when it hosts the Sacred Heart Pioneers at 7 p.m.  The game can be heard live in the Lehigh Valley on 91.3 WLVR-FM and around the world on Lehighsports.com.
