Weaver elected to National Wrestling Hall of Fame

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Lehigh wrestler Bobby Weaver ’83 is one of four men selected as distinguished members to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. Weaver, Lehigh’s only Olympic gold medalist, will be formally inducted at the Honors Weekend Banquet and Induction Ceremony in Stillwater, Oklahoma, May 30-31, 2008.

 

Weaver claimed the 105.5 pound gold medal in freestyle at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He also qualified for the 1980 Olympic team that did not compete in Moscow because of a U.S. government boycott. Weaver earned a silver medal at the 1979 World Championships and added a fifth place finish at the 1983 World Championships. He also won World Cup titles in 1980 and 1984, and was a silver medalist at the 1977 Junior World Championships.

 

While at Lehigh, Weaver won EIWA Championships at 118 in 1982 and 1983 and earned All-American honors as a junior with a third place finish. Weaver finished his career with a record of 57-14-1, and was inducted into the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.

 

A native of Easton, Weaver won three state titles at Easton High School, and also won a National Prep Championship competing for Blair Academy.

 

Joining Weaver in the class of 2008 is former Bloomsburg standout Ricky Bonomo, former Greco-Roman World Champion Mike Houck and Wayne Martin, a three-time NCAA Champion from Oklahoma.

 

The Hall of Fame's board of governors approved these selections at its semi-annual meeting held in Las Vegas earlier this month. The May, 2008 induction event will mark the 32nd anniversary Class of the Hall of Fame & Museum.
