BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After many hours spent volunteering their time and effort towards community service actions, the men’s lacrosse team was recently chosen as Lehigh University’s first-ever Volunteer Group of the Month.  The award was given by the Community Service Office at Lehigh and is in recognition of the lacrosse program’s contribution to service.  “I applaud our team members for their remarkable efforts in the Bethlehem community throughout the fall semester,” first-year head coach Kevin Cassese explained.  “I am proud of the way they have embraced the concept of giving back.  Sometimes it is difficult for students in a college setting to comprehend that they are part of a greater community that extends far beyond the University walls.  However, these young men have been able to open their eyes to that greater community and have made a collective commitment to enrich it, one small task at a time."

When Cassese took the reigns of the program in July, he immediately began a concerted effort towards getting the Mountain Hawks involved in countless Community Service projects ranging from South Bethlehem Clean Up, to Cops & Kids, charity fundraising, Community Lacrosse Night, volunteering at local lacrosse tournaments and even babysitting.  In all, the lacrosse program completed 101 hours of community service during the 2007 fall semester, which is an incredible accomplishment given the amount of time the coaches and student-athletes had to dedicate to the assorted events.

“We had set a goal of 100 service hours for the entire academic year when I met with the seniors in late August,” Cassese explained.  “Accomplishing this task in only one semester is an incredible achievement.  This speaks volumes of how important community service and giving back is to the young men in this program and I am not only very proud of them, but also impressed with how hard they worked to achieve this goal.”

When asked why there was such a concentrated push for community involvement within the lacrosse program, Cassese added, “Community Service is something that has always been a priority in my life.  It was ingrained into my core values and belief system by family and friends starting at a very young age.  When it comes down to it, you are a product of the community that surrounds you and you should carry a strong sense of pride in that community.  What better way to display that pride, then by getting out there and making a difference by giving back?"
