Mountain Hawks defeat Army 2-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh kept its playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Army Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Jesse Schram and Kyle Evans scored the two Lehigh goals, as the Mountain Hawks improve to 6-6-2 (2-3-0) while the Black Knights fall to 7-6-2 (0-4-1). Freshman Jonathan Nydell stopped three shots to pick up his first career win in net.
“This was an important win for us to stay alive for the Patriot League tournament,” said head coach Dean Koski. “We needed the three points and we found a way to win.”
The Mountain Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, just 46 seconds into the game. Evans put a shot on net that was saved by John-Michael Gallogy, however, Army could not control the ball and Schram was able to find the back of the left side of the net for his first goal of the season. Evans picked up the assist for his league leading 22nd point of the year.
Army had a great scoring opportunity in the 40th minute when Andrew Batule dribbled the ball from midfield, weaving through defenders, till he was inside the box; however, he couldn’t get enough power on his shot as Nydell made the great diving save to keep the Mountain Hawks in front.
The Brown and White out shot the Black Knights 5-3 in the first half, with each goalkeeper making one save in net.
Evans added his 11th goal of the year in the 53rd minute on a penalty kick. Evans was awarded the kick when he was taken down in the box during a fight for a loose ball. His shot sailed over the right shoulder of Gallogy to give Lehigh the 2-0 lead.
Jim Taranto nearly made it 3-0 in the 77th minute but Gallogy made a spectacular save to keep the score at 2-0.
The Black Knights had a chance to cut the lead in half with three minutes remaining when Cole Dietz made a nice move to get through three defenders and put a great shot on net, however, Nydell was there to make the save and secure the win.
“We needed to mix things up in net and Jonathan had played well against American so we gave him another chance tonight,” said Koski. “He did a nice job tonight and made a key save when we needed him to.”
