BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Head coach Kevin Cassese has announced the captains for the upcoming season and they are seniors Tom Allen, Greg Furst and Dan Honeywell. "I have been extremely pleased with the leadership skills demonstrated to date by the entire senior class,” Cassese explained. “It is a tremendous honor to be selected as captain of your team, especially when it is your teammates who are doing the selecting. I believe the players made three outstanding choices in selecting these three seniors as captains."
A senior defender from Enfield, Connecticut, Allen appeared in 13 games last season, starting ten. He handed out one assist, which came versus eventual Final Four participant Delaware, and scooped up 18 ground balls, including four versus the Blue Hens. A political science major, Allen is a multi-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, including the 2007 spring semester.
Furst saw time in seven games for the Mountain Hawks in 2007, totaling seven ground balls, two caused turnovers and one shot in that time. As a sophomore, Furst played in 12 games, scoring one goal and scooping up eight ground balls along the way. A native of Glastonbury, Connecticut Furst has made several appearances on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and is an active member in Lehigh’s award-winning C.O.A.C.H. program.
“I'm extremely honored and excited to be named one of the captains of this team,” Furst explained. “I've never been a part of such a tight-knit, hard-working group of guys that are so willing to put the well-being of the team above themselves. I believe we can do amazing things this year because of that.”
Honeywell, a native of Horseheads, New York, saw time in 12 games as a junior, making ten starts. He netted his first collegiate goal in the season opener versus Delaware, and finished the season with two scores. A Design Arts major, Honeywell scooped up 14 ground balls on the season and caused seven turnovers. In 2006, as a sophomore, Honeywell started ten games and saw time in 15. He picked up 14 ground balls on the year, including three in a win over St. Joe’s.
“I'm extremely honored to have been named captain this year," Honeywell said. "This year is going to be a great year; Coach Cassese and Coach Wray are going to put us in a position to win games, and every single player firmly believes this.”
Lehigh and its three captains recently put the finishing touches on the first half of its fall season. The Mountain Hawks now move onto the next phase of training, which will bring them up to winter break.
