BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior co-captain Michaela Pawlewicz has been named the Patriot League’s Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Pawlewicz anchored a Lehigh defense that limited rival Lafayette to just one shot on goal, as the Mountain Hawks picked up their first Patriot League victory of 2007 with a 2-0 triumph at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday night.

The senior center back helped limit the Leopards to just six shots overall on the night, as the Lehigh defense pitched its sixth shutout of the season, and moved into fifth place in the league standings with three games to play. With help from her partners on defense, seniors Courtney Jackson and Anndrea Yetter, and junior Emily Means, Lehigh won its sixth straight game over Lafayette and held the Leopards off the scoreboard for the fifth straight year.

Earlier in the week, Pawlewicz and her Lehigh teammates limited Princeton to just one goal in 12 shot attempts, four fewer goals than the Tigers scored against Lehigh last season.

Pawlewicz has started all 15 games this season, and has contributed two assists, after emerging as one of Lehigh’s top free kick takers. Defensively, Pawlewicz has helped Lehigh post a 1.02 team goals-against average, third best in the Patriot League; and has also helped keep the pressure off the goalkeeping tandem of Julie Kafka and Lauren Mains.

The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch this weekend for a pair of crucial league matches on the road. Lehigh will travel to Bucknell to face the first place Bison Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. Sunday to meet Colgate at 1 p.m.
