Lehigh extends home shutout streak

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh recorded its third shutout of the season on Friday afternoon at the South Game Field when the Mountain Hawks defeated the Columbia Lions 2-0 in the opening game of the Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic.  The Mountains Hawks improve to 3-1 on the season while Columbia drops to 1-2.  Lehigh now extends its home shutout streak to 270 minutes, with Colgate being the last team to score on the Mountain Hawks at home, which came in 2005.

Columbia looked like it was going to jump on the scoreboard first when Chris Wales launched a shot past a diving Jim Morahan that was headed to the top left corner.  However, the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play.

Lehigh jumped on the scoreboard in the first half in the ninth minute off a diving header by sophomore Adam Gazda.  Junior Joseph Clemente crossed the ball into traffic where Gazda propelled himself towards the ball.

“It was a great goal and a very important one,” said head coach Dean Koski.  “It forced Columbia to play a different game.”

The Mountain Hawks picked up their second goal in the 69th minute when Jesse Schram scored his first collegiate goal.  Initially, fellow classmate Kyle Evans looked like he was going to get his second goal of the season, but Columbia goalkeeper Michael Testa made a sliding save.  Unfortunately for Testa, the ball bounced back to a waiting Schram, who dribbled around Testa for the goal.

The game was a physical one with a total of 31 fouls, 5 yellow cards and one red card.  Testa, who received a yellow card in the 77th minute, was assessed his second yellow in the 84th after a hard tackle on sophomore Jim Taranto near the top of the box.  Alex Maffeo came in off the bench for the Lions and recorded one save within his first minute of action.

Senior goalkeeper Jim Morahan recorded a season-high five saves, including one in the last 27 seconds.  Columbia’s Scott Waddell had the last chance to get the Lions on the board when he rocketed a bicycle-kick shot.  Morahan was positioned in the right spot however, and made the save.

“Jim made some really impressive saves today,” said Koski.  “On that last one, he was in the right spot.  We usually need him to make 2-3 major saves in a game.”

The Mountain Hawks are expected to return to the Ulrich Sports Complex for the first time since August 26 on Sunday when they take on the University of Richmond Spiders in the second game of the Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast live online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio and video powered by Yahoo! Sports.
