Mountain Hawks lose high-scoring affair in OT

9/5/2006 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Natalie Hojnacki scored a pair of goals, but Lehigh was unable to hold a late lead as the Mountain Hawks fell 4-3 in overtime to Saint Joseph’s on the Goodman Campus on Tuesday afternoon. Hawks senior Megan Schutt scored the game winner in the 96th minute to end a high-scoring, physical match that featured seven goals, four cards and 18 fouls. The loss drops Lehigh to 2-2 on the season, while Saint Joseph’s improves to 2-2.

The visiting Hawks took an early lead 15 minutes in, when Ali Wean headed in Amanda Morrell’s cross, but just 33 seconds later Lehigh responded as senior Megan Duesing found classmate Daniela Molina, who beat Saint Joseph’s goalkeeper Jen Kuhn to tie the game at one. The goal was Molina’s fourth of the season, and marked the fourth consecutive game she found the back of the net.

The Mountain Hawks took the lead for the first time in the 30th minute when Hojnacki rifled a shot from the left of the 18 yard box that found the top right corner of the net.

Just 90 seconds later, St. Joe’s had an equalizer as Wean scored her second of the game on a feed from Kimmy Leigh and after 45 minutes the game was tied at two.

Lehigh held a 7-5 advantage in shots in the first half and also had five corner kicks, to just one for the Hawks.

Hojnacki gave Lehigh the lead for the second time in the 71st minute as the freshman pounced on the rebound of Lauren Fornuto’s shot and beat Kuhn for her second goal of the game.

The Mountain Hawk defense though, was unable to hold the lead as Nancy Cook deflected home a Leigh centering pass to tie the game up with 10 minutes to play. In overtime, Wean found Schutt open on the left side of the box and Schutt beat Lehigh’s Julie Kafka for the game winner.

“I was pleased with the effort in terms of being up 3-2 at home,” said head coach Manny Oudin. “We can’t afford to have the mental breakdowns that we’ve had to allow teams to game back. When we score three goals in a game, we shouldn’t lose.”

Lehigh out shot Saint Joseph’s 13-11 on the afternoon and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Mountain Hawks were whistled for more fouls, by an 11-7 count, but St. Joe’s had three players receive yellow cards, compared to just one Lehigh player.

All three of Lehigh’s home contests in 2006 have gone to overtime. The Mountain Hawks are 1-2 in those games.

The Mountain Hawks will look to get back on the winning track this weekend when they head to Newark, Delaware to take part in the Delaware Blue Hen Adidas Classic. Lehigh will face Montana Friday at 5:00 pm and will then meet tournament host Delaware on Sunday.
