BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh pitched its second shutout of the season on Monday afternoon defeating the Penn Quakers 2-0 on the Goodman Campus.  Newcomer Jim Taranto scored the game-winner for the Brown and White, while freshman Kyle Evans added a late score to secure the victory.  Senior Jim Morahan recorded his second shutout of the season, sending back three shots along the way, as the Mountain Hawks improve to 2-1 on the year, and the Quakers fall to 0-1.

Lehigh got on the board first when Taranto took a pass from freshman Jesse Schram and slipped the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season in the 25th minute.  Lehigh would outshoot its opponent 9-3 in the opening half, with both teams being whistled for eight fouls.

Evans would add an insurance goal in the 70th minute, his first collegiate score, as he got behind the Quaker defense, and found the back of the net.  Daniel Cepero sent back three Mountain Hawk shots in goal for the Quakers. Lehigh out shot the visitors 17-6 on the evening and had three corner kicks to Penn’s seven.  Each team was whistled for 14 fouls, and there were three yellow cards issued.

“This was a hard game to get a grip on for both teams,” head coach Dean Koski said afterwards.  “There was no real flow to it.  Penn struggled to get a hold and Lehigh struggled to get a hold.  The difference was we were able to score two goals, but we could have just as easily lost 2-0.”  He added, “Jimmy (Taranto) did well today, and I thought Kyle Evans’ goal was important, it gave us a cushion.  I wasn’t comfortable when we were up 1-0 and I was comfortable even when we went ahead 2-0.  But that was a big goal for him.”

Lehigh will return to action on Friday evening when the Mountain Hawks play host to the Columbia Lions in the Lehigh Soccer Classic at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for 7:00 and all of the action can be seen and heard live on lehighsports.com.
