BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s incoming class of wrestling recruits has been tabbed tops in the nation by InterMat wresting it was announced on Thursday. Last month head coach Greg Strobel announced the signing of eleven student-athletes; and bolstered by having five wrestlers ranked among the top five at their respective weight classes, the Mountain Hawks edged four-time defending national champion Oklahoma State and longtime in-state rival Penn State for top recruiting honors in 2006.

InterMat used several mathematical formulas to put together this year’s list, including scoring from ranking of incoming recruits and potential impact of recruits. Depth of class, quality of recruits and impact both next season and in the future were all focal points, along with the mathematical element.

Five of Lehigh’s eleven recruits are ranked in the top five in their weight class. David Craig ranked first at 171 pounds and is regarded as the number one recruit in the nation. Craig comes to Lehigh after a dominating high school career in which he went 184-0 and won four state championships wrestling for Brandon High School in Florida.

Two of Lehigh’s incoming freshmen were rated second in their respective weight classes. Four-time New Jersey state champion Mike Grey holds down the number two spot at 125 pounds, and is third in the country overall. The combination of Craig and Grey give the Mountain Hawks the top two recruits in the nation, who will wrestle in college next year, according to InterMat. Also earning high honors was Quakertown, Pa. native Pat Flynn, who rates second at 189.

Coming in just two spots behind Grey at 125 is Lehigh recruit Levi Mele. A three-time Utah state champion, Mele will team with Grey to bolster the Mountain Hawks lighter weights. Also in the top five is Alex Caruso, a New Jersey state champion who rates fifth at 160.

In addition to the five ranked grapplers, Lehigh signed six others who form a diverse and talented recruiting class that spans nationally from New Jersey to California.

Five of the top 30 schools listed are EIWA members (Lehigh, Cornell, Bucknell, Rutgers and Harvard) with Penn earning honorable mention honors.

The nation’s number one recruiting class will join a strong returning core of Lehigh wrestlers that features an EIWA champion and seven grapplers who have previously qualified for the NCAA Championships.
