Ben L. Bishop ’34 of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2006.  Ben, who graduated from Lehigh University with a B.A. degree in Chemistry, was referred to as the “Grand Gentleman of Lehigh Wrestling” by family and friends and remained a visible presence at Lehigh home meets, particularly to root on his grandson Ben L. Bishop III ’06.  The Lehigh Athletics Department expresses our sympathy and condolences to the entire Bishop family, including Ben’s wife Wilma, daughters Anne and Barbara, and son Ben, Jr.

A two-time EIWA title winner in 1932 and 1934, Ben also played soccer and football while at Lehigh, served as a member and officer of numerous campus clubs, and was president of his junior and senior classes.  Voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 1934 NCAA Championship Tournament, Bishop was the 155-pound National Champion that year.

Bishop held for over 45 years the Lehigh record for most consecutive opponents pinned, until 1979 when it was tied.  With a 36-4 career record, he served as an alternate on the 1936 United States Olympic Wrestling Team.  In 1992, he was among the first class of inductees into Lehigh’s Roger S. Penske Hall of Fame.

After Lehigh, Ben joined Bethlehem Steel and remained there for 42 years until retiring in 1976.  In addition to recognition as the Lehigh fan who had attended the most EIWA Tournaments, Ben received the Keystone Award presented by the Boys Club and the Distinguished Service Award presented by Lehigh University’s Home Club.

It is with a heavy heart but also with great affection and pride that we share this news and honor the wonderful life and many accomplishments of alumnus and friend Ben Bishop.
