Lehigh fights back, falls short at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lehigh rallied from a five-goal deficit to force overtime, but in the extra session the Mountain Hawks came up short as Lehigh dropped a tough 11-10 decision to Colgate at Tyler’s Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior Stephen Marino scored three goals to lead Lehigh in a losing effort. The Mountain Hawks are now 6-4 overall and 2-2 in Patriot League play; Colgate improves to 8-2 overall, 3-1 in the league.
The Raiders came out firing, out-shooting the Mountain Hawks 9-3 early on, as Colgate went up by a 7-2 score. However, Lehigh rallied to tie the score late, when Marino notched an unassisted goal with just 42 seconds to play, forcing the extra session.
Colgate won the game at the 1:33 mark of OT on a score from Robert Trasolini, avenging last year’s Lehigh overtime win in
Marino’s three scores – including two with a man-up – were a team-high. Senior Jeff Wiener and junior Blake Best added two goals apiece for the visitors.
Sophomores John Park and Eric Spirko split time in goal, with Park notching four saves in the first half of play.
For the game, the Mountain Hawks out-shot Colgate, 31-23. As usual, senior Tom Weiss was strong in the face-off X, winning 13 of 24 draws. Also noteworthy, the Mountain Hawks scored all three times on extra-man opportunities.
