Head Coach Sue Troyan spoke after the game. “I thought that we put forth a great defensive effort tonight, one of our best efforts of the season actually. It’s just very tough to overcome such a slow start, but we had our chances. We’ve just got to come out stronger from the start.”
Senior Jenny Callan recorded yet another double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while junior Adrienne Blount pulled down 11 boards and added seven points. As a team, Lehigh pulled down 46 rebounds, 16 of those coming on the offensive end, but dished out just six assists. Navy was led in scoring by Betsy Burnett with 14 points and eight rebounds, with Lauren Skrel adding 13 tallies.
The Mountain Hawks were ice cold out of the gates, missing their first 20 field goal attempts. Callan finally got Lehigh on the board with a put-back from the right block at the 9:21 mark, ending a scoreless drought of 10:39 to start the game, while at the same time, putting a stop to Navy’s 13-0 run to start the contest.
Lehigh shot a season-low ten percent from the floor (3-of-30) over the first 20 minutes, leading to a ten point halftime deficit of 21-11. The eleven-point half also marked a new low for the Mountain Hawks in a half this season.
Callan scored four and pulled down nine rebounds to pace Lehigh in the first half. Freshman Tricia Smith scored three, and junior Adrienne Blount hit two free throws and pulled down five rebounds.
Junior Betsy Burnett led the Midshipmen with nine first half points, and senior Lauren Skrel chipped in with seven.. As a team, the Midshipmen didn’t fare much better than Lehigh. Navy shot 29% from the floor (7-of-24) in the first half.
In the second half, Lehigh started to see more of its shots drop, and took its first lead of the game when Ellis swished a three with 10:17 to go, putting the visitors ahead 30-29. Navy went back in front, but a free throw by Blount at the 4:58 mark tied the score at 37, and the Mountain Hawks had life. From there however, Lehigh would score only five more points, as the Mids were able to get in the lane for a few easy buckets and free throw opportunities.
Lehigh wraps up its brief two-game road swing on Saturday, when the Mountain Hawks visit Army. Game time is set for 3:00 pm from Christl Arena, and the game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320, as well as on Lehighsports.com with Jeff Tourial calling the action.
