Lehigh falls to No. 8 Penn State Friday night

12/8/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Lehigh battled No. 8 Penn State tough all night, but bonus point wins at 125 and 197 propelled the Nittany Lions to a 23-12 win in the 95th meeting between the longtime rivals Friday night at Rec Hall. The Mountain Hawks won four bouts, but lost the final two of the night as the Brown and White falls to 3-4 on the season. Penn State improves to 4-0 on the season with the victory.

Penn State jumped out to an early 8-0 lead with wins at the first two weight classes. Nittany Lion Mark McKnight racked up eight takedowns in a 21-6 tech fall over senior Patrick Berger. Seventh ranked Jake Strayer extended Penn State’s lead with a 6-3 win over freshman Seth Ciasulli. Lehigh picked up its first win at 141 as senior Matt Ciasulli built an early 5-1 lead and held off Bryan Heller 11-4.

After Dan Vallimont scored an edge of the mat takedown in the second period to knock off Lehigh sophomore Trevor Chinn, the Mountain Hawks bounced back with two consecutive wins to cut their deficit to 11-9 after six bouts. Senior Dave Nakasone scored a reversal in the final ten seconds of the second 30 second tiebreak period to knock off Nathan Galloway 6-5. Then at 165, freshman Mike Galante scored four takedowns and a reversal in an impressive 11-5 win over Mark Friend.

At 174, it was another near-miss for senior Dave Helfrich, who scored the bouts first takedown, but ended up falling to second ranked James Yonushonis 7-6. Freshman David Craig did his part to keep Lehigh in the dual, with an 8-2.

Needing wins in the final two weights, Lehigh sent out senior Matt Cassidy to face top ranked Phil Davis. The Nittany Lion grappler built a 10-2 lead in the second period, before Cassidy was forced to default late in the second period after exhausting his three injury timeouts. The final bout of the night went to Aaron Anspach, who knocked off Lehigh sophomore Paul Weibel 6-3.

Penn State now leads in the all-time series 60-32-3.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the mat on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Pittsburgh to face the 20th ranked Panthers. The match gets underway at 1:00 pm from Fitzgerald Field House and will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio powered by Yahoo! Sports.
