Victory eludes Mountain Hawks once again

HAMILTON, N.Y. – After building a 2-1 lead, the Mountain Hawks were just one game away from their first victory of the 2006 season in their match against Colgate on Friday night at Cottrell Court. However, the Raiders kept the match alive with two perfectly timed scoring runs late in the fourth game, forcing a fifth game. Once again, Colgate got the last few points it needed to win the match 3-2.
In the first game, the Mountain Hawks, 0-24 overall and 0-10 in Patriot League play, and Raiders stayed within striking distance of each other. With Colgate, 13-12 overall and 5-5 in league action, leading the game at 21-20, the Raiders reeled off six straight points to give them enough of a cushion to win the first game.
After Lehigh dominated the second game and tied the match at 1-1, game three was much similar to the first game as Lehigh and Colgate stayed within a few points of each other. With the game tied at 25-25, the Mountain Hawks picked a perfect time to score four consecutive points in order to lead the game 29-25. After Colgate picked up two points, the Mountain Hawks put the game away off a kill by senior Michelle Schwendenmann.
Game four was much similar to the first and third games with the two teams not allowing the other team to build a huge lead. However, Colgate scored seven straight points late into the game to force a decisive game five.
After building a five point deficit early in game five, the Mountain Hawks battled back to eventually tie the match at 12-12. However, Colgate got the last points it needed to put the match away.
Senior Michelle Schwendenmann and freshman Brittany Thurston each recorded a double-double. Schwendenmann, who earned her seventh double-double in Patriot League play, had a season-high 28 kills and 15 digs. Thurston, who had her second collegiate double-double, had 12 kills and 14 digs. Junior Shannon Spafford helped in the Mountain Hawks’ offense, recording 13 kills. Freshman Sarah Wolfe became just the third Patriot League player to record 60+ assists in a single match. Wolfe, who joins Army’s Maureen Bannon and American’s Christina Nash, put up a season-high 64 assists. Senior Cassidy Maumus anchored the Mountain Hawks’ defense as she recorded a season-high 27 digs.
Katrina Zawojski and Kelsea Loveless powered the Raiders’ offense as both players recorded 20 or more kills. Zawojski had a team-high 25 kills while Loveless had a double-double with 20 kills and 16 digs. Meghan Fanta paced the offense with 58 assists as Jackie Adlam paced the defense with 23 digs.
Lehigh returns to action for its sixth-straight road match Saturday night when the Mountain Hawks take on Bucknell. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
