The Mountain Hawks came out and showed the signs of 4 o’clock exams early in the match, but fought through the sluggishness to find their game. Stevens took a cross pass from in front of the net from sophomore Michael Hessemer at the 33:02 and deposited it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Lehigh lead. The score would remain that way heading into halftime.
In the second half, Lehigh could not seem to pull away from the Colonials, but the defense did its part to keep the score at 1-0. O’Reilly would add a goal late though, when freshman Adam Gazda put a corner kick into play that O’Reilly booted into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the match.
For the game, Lehigh out shot George Washington 21-18 and had eight corners to the Colonials five. George Washington had 17 fouls called against it, while the Brown and White were whistled for eight. Sophomore Charlie Sales picked up career shut out number-ten with five saves in goal for Lehigh, while George Washington goal keeper Derek Biss stopped 11 Lehigh shots. Adam Williamson and Stevens led Lehigh with four shots each, while three different Colonials unleashed three shots each.
Head coach Dean Koski was pleased with the way his team was able to fight through the slow start and get the victory. “We weren’t sharp on the day, and I think that is a by-product of four o’clock exams. We expected that might be the case, but we still have to fight through that.” Koski continued, “George Washington is a good team, we continue to see different types of teams.”
Koski then commented on the outstanding defense of the Mountain Hawks, which has still yet to yield a goal at home. “As critical as I am on our defensive play, I think we did a nice job tonight. We try and limit our opponent’s opportunities; we’ll give them shots from far out, but nothing in close. Nice job done tonight.”
