No. 30 Lehigh keeps it rolling with a 2-1 road victory

WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 30 Lehigh continued its torrid start to the season with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday.  It was Lehigh’s first victory over the Crusaders since 1998, when the Brown and White won 4-0.  The Mountain Hawks, ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic Region, fell behind early in the match, but continued to fight their way back, eventually coming away with the crucial road victory on a penalty shot by junior John O’Reilly at the 72:22.  With the victory, Lehigh improves to 6-1-1, and remains perfect in the league at 2-0.  The Crusaders fall to .500 at 5-5 overall, and 0-2 in Patriot League action.

Head coach Dean Koski commented on his team's big road win following the victory.  "Peter Classi scored a great goal for us at the end of the first half to give us some momentum heading into halftime.  We then did a nice job of fighting the entire second half, stepping it up on the defensive end."

Koski continued, "A Holy Cross player was whistled for the penalty, and John O'Reilly made him pay for it with the goal.  I think our guys did a great job today playing on a tough field against a very good league opponent.  This is a great Patriot League victory for us."

Holy Cross jumped on the score board first when Marsalis Beckford took a feed from Sefton Kincaid and beat Lehigh keeper Charlie Sales at the 11:38 mark for a 1-0 Crusader lead.  The score would remain that way until just under two minutes in the half was left, when Classi scored an unassisted goal, blasting a shot past Holy Cross keeper Richard Whipple to tie the score at one with 1:18 left in the half, which is how the score would stay heading into halftime.

The Mountain Hawks defense then turned back into the stingy unit that has shut out five opponents this season, limiting Holy Cross to just one shot in the entire second half.  A hand-ball penalty called on the Crusaders set up O’Reilly’s penalty kick, which the junior sent into the back of the net, making him a perfect two-for-two on the season in that category.  Lehigh would hold onto that one goal lead, and head home with yet another victory.

Sales recorded two saves on the afternoon, while Whipple finished with five of his own.  The Brown and White out shot the Crusaders 13-5 for the match and had eight corner kicks to two for the home team.  Once again, senior Adam Williamson led the Mountain Hawks in shots with four, while no Crusader had more than one shot on goal for the entire game.

Lehigh returns to action next Saturday, October 8 when the Mountain Hawks travel to Washington, D.C. for a pivotal match in the Patriot League against American.  Game time is scheduled for 2:30.
