Lehigh suffers first loss of season at Penn

9/11/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, as the Mountain Hawks were beaten by Penn 2-1 in the Penn Soccer Classic at Rhodes Field. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 2-1 on the season, while the Quakers claim the championship of their tournament and remain undefeated at 3-0 in 2005.

The Quakers got on the board first as Mike Klein scored just seven minutes into the contest. It was the first goal allowed by the Mountain Hawks this season. Lehigh would pull even five minutes before the half, as senior Peter Classi found classmate Adam Williamson, who beat Dan Cepero for his second goal of the season, and the game was deadlocked at one at halftime.

The game remained tied into the 77th minute when John Rhodes beat Mountain Hawk keeper Charlie Sales to put Penn up 2-1. Lehigh out shot Penn 12-7 on the afternoon but could not even the score as the Brown and White fall for the first time in 2005.

Sales was credited with one save for the Brown and White, while Cepero made five stops to earn the win for the Quakers. Lehigh also had five corner kick opportunities compared to just two for Penn.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Saturday when they will open their home schedule against Binghamton. Game time set for 7:00 pm from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
