BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh had to fight through adversity on Saturday evening, but the Mountain Hawks did just that, in coming away with a 1-0 victory over No. 20 Binghamton at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The win was Lehigh’s first over a ranked opponent since downing No. 25 Penn on September 12, 2003 in Philadelphia.  The hero of the night was senior Adam Williamson who scored on a free kick at the 37:41 mark.  Coincidently, Williamson also scored the game-winner versus Penn in 2003.  With the win, the Mountain Hawks, ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Bearcats suffer their first loss and fall to 5-1-1.

 

Lehigh was forced to play a man down after senior Jim Stevens was ejected at the 55:11 mark, when he received a red card.  But the Mountain Hawks were not flustered and continued to play strong defense and kept the Bearcats off of the board.  For the game, Lehigh was out shot 14-10, and had only two corners to Binghamton’s seven.  There were 19 fouls called in the contest and four cards handed out. 

 

Sophomore Charlie Sales had a brilliant game in between the pipes for the Brown and White with seven saves, including several on point blank shots.  Binghamton goal keeper Ryan Bertoni stopped four Mountain Hawk shots.  Lehigh was led in shots by senior Peter Classi with three, while Ibrahim Yusif and Barry Neville both had four for the Bearcats.

 

Lehigh head coach Dean Koski offered his thoughts after the upset win.  “This was a good win for us under challenging circumstances.  Our guys showed some fortitude out there to play the way we had to in order to get the win.”  Koski continued, “Binghamton is a great team, but everyone came together and we got the result we wanted out there tonight in what was a very hard fought contest.”

 

Lehigh returns to action on Friday, September 23, when the Mountain Hawks host Navy at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for approximately 7:30.
