BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The collegiate wrestling season is still several months away, but there’s simply no keeping Greg Strobel away from the mats. This week, the Lehigh head coach is in Izmir, Turkey serving as a team leader for the U.S. freestyle and Greco-roman teams at the 23rd World University Games. The games, which run from August 11-21, are open to all student-athletes that have not been out of university or its equivalent for over a year and are between 17 and 28 years old. As a team leader, Strobel will assist the U.S. team and coaching staff as they compete at the Games.

Strobel is no stranger to international competition. He coached the 2000 United States Olympic team in Sydney, Australia and that same year guided the U.S. to a World Cup championship. Last summer, Strobel traveled to the Athens Olympics to assist the U.S. team that featured former Lehigh assistant coach Kerry McCoy.

"I've been selected to coach or assist at the Olympics, the World Championships, the World Trials, the Pennsylvania Junior Freestyle team, the NCAAs, the World Cup and the Goodwill Games,” explained Strobel before departing for Turkey. “I had never helped out at the World University Games before, so I'm really excited to go."

Wrestling competition at the World University Games gets underway on Friday, August 12.
