Wieder, Hamasaki lead Lehigh to doubleheader split

Allentown, PA – Lehigh split an afternoon doubleheader with Villanova at Patriots Park on Tuesday. After falling 5-3 in game one, the Mountain Hawks rebounded with a strong effort and took the nightcap 8-0. With the split, Lehigh is now 27-7 on the year and a perfect 12-0 against Patriot League opponents. Villanova is 25-17 overall, including a 2-4 record in the Big East.

In game one, starter Emily Ling struggled and took the loss, allowing an uncharacteristic 5 runs in 6 innings. The defense behind Ling was sloppy at times, with an error and a few poor decisions that led to extra baserunners. The first Wildcat run scored after Villanova freshman second baseman Jackie Dempsey came all the way around from second on a passed ball.

“Obviously it wasn’t Emily’s best outing in game one,” head coach Fran Troyan said. “We had some communication breakdowns.”

Starter Shannon Williams struck out 10 Mountain Hawks in five innings on her way to the win. Lehigh scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th and had the tying run come to the plate in the person of Jess Young. But freshman Kat Walsh retired Young on a ground ball to end the game.

“I was proud that we were able to put that behind us and have a good effort in game two,” Troyan said.

The second game was won behind the stellar pitching of sophomore Heather Hamasaki, who shut the Wildcats out for all six innings and allowed only two hits. Junior catcher Mary Wieder had a phenomenal day at the plate, knocking five hits and plating six teammates between the two games.

Lehigh scored two runs in the third, three more in the fourth and the last three in the sixth. Lehigh’s final run came on a Whitney Schenbeck bases-load walk that ended her nine-game hitting streak. The game ended after six innings when the 8-run rule was invoked.

Lehigh returns to the field when they visit Colgate for a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
