Following a week in which he led Lehigh to two victories, holding both opponents under ten goals, freshman goal keeper Eric Spirko has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week.  Spirko and the Mountain Hawks defeated St. Joe’s on Tuesday in Ft. Lauderdale by a score of 15-7, and returned home to play Siena, and the Brown and White emerged victorious 15-2.  Spirko leads all of the Lehigh goal keepers with three wins and 50 saves thus far this season.  He has posted a save percentage of .562 in over 285 minutes of action, while scooping up 16 groundballs.

In Lehigh’s game with St. Joe’s, Spirko was brilliant in goal, sending back 13 Hawk shots, as the Mountain Hawks avenged last season’s loss.  Spirko then continued his stellar play against the Saints of Siena, as he recorded three saves and scooped up two groundballs.

Head Coach Chris Wakely likes what he has seen so far from his first year goal keeper.  “Eric is settling into his role very nicely for us.  He has a calm, cool demeanor about himself, and he does not get frazzled easily during games.”  Wakely continues, “If he has a bad stretch during a game, he doesn’t allow it to get to him.  I’m proud of Eric and pleased to see him honored with this award.  I know he will continue to work hard and improve each day for us.”

Spirko and the Mountain Hawks get back in action on Wednesday afternoon, as No. 25 Penn comes to town.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 from the Ulrich Sports Complex, as Lehigh looks for its third straight win overall.  The Brown and White is currently 2-0 in 2005 in games played at home.
