No. 4 Lehigh survives tough test, sweeps ACC foes

2/5/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

Charlottesville, VA – Despite having four starters out of the lineup No. 4 Lehigh swept a pair of ACC opponents, picking up a convincing win over Maryland 39-4 then holding off a pesky Virginia team 22-13 Saturday in Charlottesville. The Mountain Hawks have now won four straight duals and improve to 19-3 on the year while the Cavaliers fall to 4-9 and the Terrapins drop to 3-9-1.

The Virginia match was tighter than most expected as the Mountain Hawks held a mere 16-13 lead with two bouts remaining before sophomore Jon Bruno, subbing for Jon Trenge edged Scott Smith 10-9 with riding time proving the difference in the match. Heavyweight Paul Weibel then made his return to the Lehigh lineup picking up an 8-3 win over Nick Smith to give the Mountain Hawks their 19th dual win this season.

The Cavaliers got off to a fast start as Anthony Burke scored a major decision over Andrew Rizzi in the night’s opening bout. After Matt Ciasulli got Lehigh on the board with a 6-0 decision over Byron Dunlap, Chet Taylor extended the Virginia lead with a 7-6 decision over Mark McCauley who was filling in for Cory Cooperman.

Lehigh got a huge boost as 149 as Matt Anderson scored a pin over Paul Bowman to vault the Mountain Hawks into the lead. After Paul Bjorlo scored a 12-8 decision over Lehigh’s David Nakasone the Cavs held a 10-9 lead after five bouts.

Brian LaMay stepped in for Troy Letters, who was resting his injured knee, and picked up a key major decision over Conor Manley. Travis Frick then scored a decision over Rocco Caponi to put Lehigh up by six with three bouts left.

Lehigh could have all but sealed things with a win at 184, but Virginia’s Kyle Narkiewicz scored a thrilling 7-5 sudden victory decision over Matt Cassidy, countering off a Cassidy shot to score the decisive takedown in the second sudden victory period. Lehigh was only up three when Bruno picked up the big victory at 197 and then Weibel picked up his win at heavyweight.

Earlier in the day Lehigh topped Maryland by a convincing 39-4 score. The Mountain Hawks got off to a fast start as Andrew Rizzi won by forfeit at 125 then Matt Ciasulli scored an 8-0 major decision over Sean Carr. Charlie Pinto got the Terps on the board with a major decision over Mark McCauley, who subbed for Cory Cooperman at 141.

In one of the more exciting bouts of the afternoon freshman Dave Nakasone built an early lead then utilized three near fall points late to pick up a 14-7 decision over Andrew Schaffler. Matt Anderson moved up in weight in place of Derek Zinck and picked up a tech fall over Matt Rothstein, putting the Brown and White up 18-4 at the halfway point.

Brian LaMay became the second Mountain Hawk backup to score a win over Maryland. LaMay, wrestling in place of Troy Letters, who was resting his knee, bested Jason Kiessling 11-3 using a takedown in the final seconds to score the major. Travis Frick followed up that effort with a major of his own at 174. Matt Cassidy then made it three consecutive majors for Lehigh with an impressive 12-2 win over Mike Maceroli. Jon Bruno then scored a 4-0 decision over Yony Noy in the afternoon’s final bout as the Terrapins forfeited the heavyweight division.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday night when they return home to face EIWA foe Army. The match gets underway at 7:00 from the Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. For tickets call (610) 7LU-GAME, log on to lehighsports.com or visit the Lehigh ticket office located in Grace Hall.
