Hot shooting leads American past Mountain Hawks

2/23/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Washington, DC –  It was a rough night for Lehigh in the nations capital on Wednesday night as the Mountain Hawks dropped their second straight contest 65-50 to American at Bender Arena. The Brown and White were unable to overcome hot American shooting early on as the Mountain Hawks fall to 17-9 on the year, 9-4 in the Patriot League. American improves to 12-14, 7-6 in the League. Lehigh’s loss clinches the Patriot League regular season championship for Holy Cross.

Turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Mountain Hawks in the opening half. Lehigh turned the ball over eight times and shot just 37 percent from the field, while American shot well above its season average. The Eagles shoot 38 percent from the field on the season, but in the first half connected on 47 percent of their field goal attempts as they opened up a double digit lead. Lehigh was able to hang tough and cut its deficit to 37-27 at the break lead by 15 points from Jessica DePalo.

In the second half Lehigh continued to struggle, trailing by as many as 17 at one point and the Mountain Hawks were never able to recover as they fail to pick up what would be a school record tenth Patriot League win.

DePalo led all scorers with 27 points. No other Mountain Hawk scored in double figures. Jenny Callan added six points and seven boards for Lehigh. American placed four in double figures led by Kim Salem’s 16 points. American finished the game shooting 41 percent and out-rebounded Lehigh by a 40-32 margin.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the court Saturday night to take on archrival Lafayette in the regular season finale. Tip off set for 7:05 from Stabler Arena. Tickets can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME or by visiting the Stabler Arena box office on game day.
