DE – Lehigh fell to
Delaware in its season opener on Saturday afternoon by a score of 12-2.
The Blue Hens scored the games first four goals and never looked back.
Lehigh sits at 0-1 on the young season, while
Delaware improves to 2-0.
Delaware scored first at the 12:29 mark of the first quarter when Andy Hipple netted his third goal of the season. Dave Powers, Alex Smith and Powers again added goals to put the home team in front 4-0 with 6:51 left in the second quarter. Andrew Mastromonaco got the Mountain Hawks on the board with a score of his own at the 5:07 mark of the first half, but the Blue Hens would add two more scores before the half, taking a 7-1 lead into the locker room.
Dan Deckelbaum scored the second half’s first goal at the 10:04 mark to put the home team in front by seven, and goals then followed by Jordan Hall, Vincent Giordano, John Carrozza, and Deckelbaum to put Delaware in front 11-1 with 1:42 left in the third. David Gaunt opened the fourth with a Mountain Hawk goal just 43 seconds in, but Delaware continued its offensive assault, as Hall scored with 13:19 left to set up the 12-2 final tally.
In goal for the Brown and White, Eric Spirko stopped 12 shots, while senior Tom Ellis played 15 minutes and sent back one Blue Hen shot. Greg Morin led the Mountain Hawks with four shots on the afternoon, while Gaunt also had four shots.
Lehigh was 19-26 in clear opportunities, while Delaware was 20-24. The Mountain Hawks won just 2 of 18 face offs on the day, but had just 19 turnovers to Delaware’s 24.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, February 26 when the Mountain Hawks travel to New York to take on Marist. Game time is slated for 1:00.
