Lehigh blanks Holy Cross to win PL regular season title

The two teams played a scoreless first half with the Mountain Hawks outshooting the Crusaders 5-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Mountain Hawks finally put a goal on the board seven minutes into the second half when sophomore Melissa Montalvo beat Crusader keeper Jessica Pietrowicz low to the left side for her second goal of the season. Junior Lauren Calabrese assisted on the goal.
The lead grew to 2-0 when sophomore defender Courtney Jackson placed a long shot just underneath the crossbar for her first career goal. The Mountain Hawks would add one more goal in the final minute as junior Lauren Fornuto scored her first goal of the season, and first since the 2003 heading home a Shannon Lockwood corner kick.
The Mountain Hawks outshot the Crusaders 18-12 on the afternoon and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Julie Kafka recorded eight saves in posting her 12th shutout of the season. As a team, Lehigh posted clean sheets in 13 of 17 regular season games. Pietrowicz made nine saves in a losing effort for the Crusaders.
“Today we got a good result to finish the regular season,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We’re looking forward to hosting the Patriot League Tournament next weekend.”
Lehigh will be the number one seed in the Patriot League Tournament, which the Mountain Hawks will host at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks will face number four seed Bucknell in the semifinals on Friday, with No. 2 Colgate and No. 3 Army doing battle in the other semifinal.
