West Point, NY – Lehigh defeated Army 72-64 on Thursday evening at Christl Arena, to move the Mountain Hawks to 14-5 overall and 6-0 in Patriot League play.  The 6-0 start is the best ever for Lehigh, while the 14-5 mark is the finest beginning to a season in head coach Sue Troyan’s era.  Senior Mary Frances Hynoski scored a career-high 17 points for the Brown and White, while junior Jenny Callan was a terror on the backboards, ripping down a career-best 16 boards, while adding 11 points.  With the loss, the Black Knights drop to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in league action.

Senior Jessica DePalo added 16 points for Lehigh, while classmate Chantal St. Laurent scored a career-high seven points and also handed out six assists, with zero turnovers.  Sophomore Sara Ellis was the fourth Mountain Hawk in double figures with ten tallies.  Lehigh connected on 45 percent of its field goal attempts and limited the Black Knights to just 35 percent from the field.  Army was led in scoring by Cara Enright who poured in a career-high 27 points, while Shavonne Holden added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Lehigh led 39-27 at the half, after hitting 47 percent from the field, and holding Army to just nine field goals and 26 percent shooting.  Lehigh then built up a 15-point second half lead that the Black Knights were able to cut into, eventually getting it to six, but the Mountain Hawks kept their composure down the stretch to pick up the road victory.  The Brown and White out rebounded its opponent 45-36, but did commit 20 turnovers to Army’s 19.  Lehigh hit on 16 of 23 from the charity stripe, but sunk only two of 14 from beyond the arc.

Troyan liked the way her team fought hard until the finish en route to the history making victory.  “It was a physical game, they (Army) battled us very hard until the very end, but we never gave up and came away with the win.”  Troyan then commented on the play of Hynoski, “Mary was huge for us – every time we needed a bucket, she went under the basket, got the rebound and bailed us out.  A lot of people stepped it up for us tonight and it was just a total team effort out there.”

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks travel to Worcester, MA to take on the Crusaders of Holy Cross.  Lehigh has defeated its league rival two straight seasons inside of the Hart Center and if the Crusaders defeat Lafayette on Friday evening, it would set up a showdown between two 6-0 clubs.  Tip-off is scheduled for just after 1:00 and all of the action can be heard live on 91.3 FM WLVR, as well as lehighsports.com with streaming audio provided by Yahoo! Sports.  Jeff Tourial will provide the commentary.
