Junior Adam Williamson scored the game’s only goal in the 94th minute to propel Lehigh to victory over Jacksonville Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The weather and Mountain Hawks goalkeeper Sam Bishop both held up and Lehigh sent a rowdy crowd home happy. The Mountain Hawks have yet to lose at home and are 3-1 overall. Jacksonville falls to 3-2.
Williamson’s goal came after a scramble in front of Jacksonville goalkeeper Greg Williams. After freshman forward Joe Clemente centered to Williamson, Williams dove in to try to knock it loose. After briefly losing control, Williamson gathered himself and knocked the ball into the empty net.
Lehigh head coach Dean Koski felt that the Mountain Hawks could have played better. “We’re still not clicking on all cylinders. We struggled tonight to combine,” he said. “We’re only a week away from Patriot League play and we have to get ready. We were only OK tonight, but we’ll take the win.”
Lehigh controlled the action for most of the extremely physical match, winning the majority of 50-50 balls and attempting 12 shots to Jacksonville’s six. However, the Dolphins got the first great scoring chance when sophomore Tommy Krizanovic broke in on Bishop in the first half and appeared to beat the Lehigh goaltender for the game’s first goal. A Lehigh defender came out of nowhere to knock the ball away and there were no serious scoring threats until Williamson ended the game.
Lehigh returns to action and plays Saint Joseph’s in the second round of the Lehigh Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Saint Joseph’s fell to Lafayette in Friday’s first game, 4-1.
