Mountain Hawk offense has come to life

Bethlehem, PA - Following three consecutive victories in which it outscored its opponents 15-2, Lehigh returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon to take on Monmouth in West Long Branch, New Jersey at 4:00.  The Mountain Hawks have already scored 20 goals this season after scoring just 22 in all of 2003.  Lehigh has shutout its last two opponents, including a 9-0 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon, which was the biggest shutout win in school history.

Freshman Katie Noon and senior Sheila Clabby have led the offense with Noon tallying five goals in the Mountain Hawks first six games and Clabby registering seven points on three goals and one assist.  Noon was recently named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for her efforts, which included two goals in the big win over Robert Morris.

Seniors Krista Jamieson, Dana Griffin and Kristi Miller have also stepped up their play, with Miller finding the back of the net once this season and handing out three assists, while Jamieson dished out two helpers in the Mountain Hawks 3-0 win over Davidson on Sunday.  Griffin continues to be a force with her speed and strength on the defensive end of the field and she has also handed out one assist thus far.

Griffin believes the team is playing with more confidence, something that head coach Julie Mazer has instilled in the team.  "I think the team has been seeing one another more out on the field, which leads to better and more accurate passes.  The newfound accuracy of our passes allows us to move the ball quickly up the field and around our opponents."

Griffin continues, "I think Coach has done a great job of improving our skill level and she has found a game plan that works well with the type of talent we have on this team.  She had lofty goals from the beginning and I think this year we (the team) believe we have the power to acheive them inlarge part to the things she has taught us in practice."

Miller could not agree more with Griffin.  "Coach Mazer has allowed us to see our true potential; she and the rest of the coaching staff have never lost faith in us.  Coach has showed us that every day is another chance to be great."

In goal for Lehigh, senior Jeanine Hoff and junior Meghan Gove have split time in the cage thus far in 2004 and the results have been very promising.  Gove has posted a goals against average of 2.69 in four appearances this season, while Hoff has not allowed a goal in her last 140 minutes of action, dropping her GAA to 2.00 on the year.

Mazer is pleased with the way her team has started, but knows that there is a long season ahead for the Mountain Hawks.  “We’ve been working towards this type of play in practice and we have been able to put it all together lately in the games.  This has been an important step in our progression and we (the coaching staff) have held the players accountable to play at a higher level.”

Mazer continues, “Our passing is much crisper out there and we’ve been playing together much better.  We are more organized on the defensive end of the field as well.”  Mazer continues, “We are not going to change anything that we’ve been doing, but rather just continue to work hard everyday and continue to get better.  We want to be better today than we were yesterday, and continue that trend every single day.”

Following the Monmouth game, Lehigh returns home for a pair of contests this weekend.  Columbia comes to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday, while Sacred Heart will be in South Bethlehem on Sunday afternoon.  Both games begin at one, with the Columbia game being broadcast live on the Lehigh website at lehighsports.com.
