The 2004 Summer Olympics officially get underway with Friday night’s opening ceremonies in Athens. Several members of the Lehigh sports family have ties to the Olympics, both past and present.

Assistant wrestling coach Kerry McCoy is competing in the heavyweight (120kg) division of the freestyle competition. This will be the second Olympics for McCoy, who finished fifth at the 2000 games in Sydney. McCoy is coming off a successful 2003 season, in which he won the gold medal at the Pan-Am Games and won silver at the World Championships. The five-time national champion is looking forward to his second chance at Olympic gold.

“I’m going (to Athens) to win,” McCoy said. “When I wrestle my best no one can beat me.”

McCoy will have his opportunity beginning August 27 when the men’s freestyle competition gets underway.

When McCoy wrestled in Sydney four years ago, the U.S. freestyle team was coached by Lehigh’s head wrestling Coach Greg Strobel. Under his guidance the U.S. team won four medals – two silver and two bronze. He describes walking into the stadium for the opening ceremonies as an “awesome experience.”

“As a coach, we don't get to see many events,” Strobel said.  “There is a lot of pressure to do all you can for your athletes.  I do a lot of scouting.”

Strobel his headed to Athens as a volunteer assistant for this year’s team. It will be his sixth Olympic games. He has gone as a head coach, assistant coach, volunteer assistant and even as a team leader for Greco-Roman wrestling. As for these games, he is confident in the ability of his Lehigh assistant.

“McCoy is ready,” Strobel says. “There are about 5or 6 guys in the world at his weight that can win the gold.  I hope Kerry brings his best game.”

Wrestling isn’t the only sport in which Lehigh has ties to the games. Dayne Mickelson averaged four points and four rebounds last season as a forward on the Mountain Hawks Patriot League Champion basketball team. No, he is not the newest member of the “Dream Team,” but Olympic success is in his blood. Mickelson’s father Tim won a silver medal in crew at the 1972 games in Munich.

“He’s always been very modest – never talking too much about his accomplishments,” the 6’8” senior says about his father. “I’ve heard many stories throughout my childhood about the hard work and the great time he’s had with coaches and teammates.”

Former men’s basketball standout Kemble “Kem” Widmer III will be in Athens, as a member of a very different team. The 1996 graduate is a program manager for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), the firm hired by the Greek government to help secure Games.

His job is to ensure the safety of all the athletes, spectators and media persons.

“To ensure that these Olympics go off without a hitch has taken the hard work of hundreds of people from all over the world. It’s been one of the most amazing experiences of my life,” said Widmer.

The games of the XXVIII Olympiad will take place from August 13-29 in Athens, Greece.
