Lucas and King garner All-League honors

Following a very strong second half to the 2004 season that saw Lehigh win four of its final seven games, the Mountain Hawks were rewarded on Tuesday as two members of the team were named to the All-Patriot League Team.  Sophomore Jeff King and junior Andrew Lucas were honored on the 23-player 2004-All-League team, which is voted on by the league’s head coaches, and contains an elite list of lacrosse players from across the Patriot League, which is steadily growing into one of the country’s best.  Currently, three of the teams in the league are ranked in the top-25, with an additional two receiving votes in the weekly poll.

Head Coach Chris Wakley offers his thoughts on his 2004 All-League selections:  “Usually, the all- league honors go to the teams that are sitting atop the standings in the Patriot League.  So, considering where we finished in the standings and that we did not qualify for the postseason tournament, I think this is a tremendous honor for these two young men and shows that we are receiving respect from across the league.”  Wakely continues, “It’s also nice that we get these two back next year.  This will be just the second time in my tenure here at Lehigh that we have an all-league selection returning the next season, and this time we’ll have two, so that is encouraging.”

Both Lucas and King served as captains for Lehigh during the 2004 season, and helped lead the young Mountain Hawks to a promising finish to the year.  Lucas, a second team selection, scored 13 goals in 2004, which was good for second on the Mountain Hawks, and he also handed out two assists and scooped up 15 groundballs.

Wakley is excited for Lucas and pleased to see him garner some recognition.  “Andrew constantly received long stick attention and was continually double and triple teamed, but he never backed down and responded well.  This is a well-deserved honor for him and I’m happy that we get him back for one more year.”

King, also a second team selection, developed into one of the Patriot League’s top defenders, as he made the switch this season from midfield and wound up fifth in all of the Patriot League, averaging 4.50 groundballs per game.  King led Lehigh with 72 groundballs on the season and also scored one goal, while making 12 starts on the year.

Wakely was not only happy for King, but also impressed with the ease at which King made the position switch.  “Jeff was converted to defense just two weeks before our first game and for him to have such an outstanding season is just remarkable.”

This season marked the tenth consecutive season that Lehigh has had at least two All-Patriot League selections, with 1993 being the last time no Mountain Hawk was selected.
