Lehigh drops 10-6 contest at Wagner

4/27/2004 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Staten Island, NY – Lehigh dropped its third straight contest, as the Mountain Hawks came up on the short end of a 10-6 score against Wagner in a non-league match-up on Tuesday afternoon.  The loss drops Lehigh to 22-20 on the season, while the Seahawks improve to 12-23 in 2004.

Freshman designated hitter Matt McBride continued to swing the bat well, and he helped the Mountain Hawks to an early lead.  McBride’s RBI double down the left field line gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  The extra-base knock was his Patriot League-leading and Lehigh school record 20th double of the season.

Wagner quickly answered with three in the bottom of the first of Lehigh starter Chris Postlewait, and the Mountain Hawks never recovered.  The Seahawks led for the remainder of the day and cruised to the win.

Freshman catcher Matt Capell made his push for more playing time, swinging the bat extremely well on Tuesday.  He was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a three-run homer to left in the top of the eighth inning, his second blast of the season.  Second baseman John Zaszewski added two hits and scored twice for Lehigh.  In all, the Mountain Hawks pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon.

Lehigh returns to the diamond on Wednesday for a pair of must-win games.  The Mountain Hawks host rival Lafayette in a Patriot League doubleheader at Goodman Field.  If Lehigh wins both games, the Mountain Hawks will advance to the Patriot League’s postseason tournament for the third consecutive season.  If Lafayette wins at least once, then Holy Cross will earn the final bid.  First pitch of game one Wednesday is scheduled for 1:00.
