Hamasaki sets new K record, Lehigh wins two games

Kissimmee, FL – The Lehigh pitching staff continues to churn out dominating performances, and the Mountain Hawks rode phenomenal efforts from three pitchers on Thursday to a doubleheader sweep in Florida at Osceola Park. In the first game, Lehigh got a record-setting performance from freshman Heather Hamasaki in route to a 4-1 win over Butler, then needed ten innings to beat Yale 2-1 in the second game. With the two wins, Lehigh improved to 13-3-1 on the season.

In the first game, freshman Heather Hamasaki turned in one of the all-time best performances in Lehigh history, giving up just two hits and one run in seven innings while striking out an incredible 16 batters, a new Lehigh record. Hamasaki struck out the side in the second, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings on her way to her third victory (3-2) of the season.

The top of the lineup did much of the damage for the Mountain Hawk offense, as the top four hitters each had two hits in the game, and Julie Sterrett and Kelly Kliewer each had a RBI as well.

The second game against Yale, seven innings were not enough to decide the outcome.  Lehigh got their first run in the third inning, as a double by Sterrett scored Liz Gripp.  Yale countered with a run in the top of the sixth, chasing starter Kate Arico.  Arico pitched well before giving way to Emily Ling, going five and a third innings and giving up only the one run on three hits.

The game was still tied going into the bottom of the tenth, where Lehigh scored the winning run on a suicide squeeze by Jessica Young that plated Whitney Schenbeck.

Ling (3-0) picked up the win in relief, holding Yale hitless over four and two thirds innings and striking out eight.

On the day, the Mountain Hawk pitchers gave up only two runs in 17 innings and struck out 24.

Lehigh finishes up their trip to Florida on Friday with another two games, against Quinnipiac at 8:45 and Niagara at 10:45.
