Spring break ends on down note with sweep in Florida

3/12/2004 12:00:00 AM | Softball

Kissimmee, FL – Lehigh dropped a pair of close ballgames on Friday, losing back to back games for the first time this season.  The games were both very close, as the Mountain Hawks lost 2-1 to Quinnipiac in the first game and then 6-5 to Niagara in the second. With the two losses, Lehigh completes its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 6-4 record during the jaunt, and moves to 13-5-1 overall.

The first game was a very close pitcher’s duel, as each team was only able to scratch out two hits apiece. Quinnipiac took advantage of an error by Jessica Young in the top of the fifth to plate two runs, and Lehigh could not make up the one run deficit. Emily Ling suffered her first loss of the season (3-1), despite giving up just the two hits and no earned runs in seven innings.  She also struck out 10 in the losing effort.

Though the first loss was painful for the team, the second one would be even worse. Leading 5-2 going to the last of the seventh, Niagara rallied to score four runs in the inning, including a walk-off three run shot by Cheryl Julicher. Kate Arico (5-1) took the loss, pitching three innings in relief and giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits.

Erin Hengemuhle and Whitney Schenbeck each had multi-hit games for the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh returns to action next Friday, March 19, with a pair of games in Harrisonburg, VA, against James Madison and Sacred Heart.
