Lehigh splits a pair in Virginia

Harrisonburg, VA - Lehigh split a pair of games on Friday afternoon in Virginia, defeating Sacred Heart 5-0 in the opener, and then falling to host James Madison by a score of 3-1 in the nightcap. In the early game, the Mountain Hawks received another strong outing from Emily Ling inside the circle as she led the team to victory No. 14 of the season. With the split, Lehigh now stands at 14-6-1 on the season. In the Mountain Hawks game versus Sacred Heart Ling hurled a complete-game, two-hit shutout striking out nine and walking only one in seven innings. The right-hander encountered difficulty only once and that was in the third when she surrendered two hits and one walk before starting an inning-ending double play on a grounder back to the mound. She cruised through her other six innings without allowing a base runner. Freshman Whitney Schenbeck started the top of the first inning off with a walk for the Mountain Hawks and scored on junior Jessica Young’s single down the right field line to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Senior Shana Treon stroked a two-out double to right-center field in the third inning, plating freshman Julie Sterrett who singled to start the inning. The Mountain Hawks added three more runs in the fifth inning, as Sterrett singled and junior Kelly Kliewer walked. Sophomore Mary Wieder singled home Sterrett, giving Lehigh a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Erin Hengemuhle then tripled to right field, scoring Kliewer and Wieder, making the score 5-0. Lehigh received two-hit games from Sterrett and Treon, while Hengemuhle contributed two hits and two RBI. In the nightcap, James Madison junior Katie Jaworski broke a 1-1 extra-inning tie, hitting a pinch-hit, two-run home run with two outs in the eighth inning as the Dukes topped Lehigh, 3-1, in Game 4 of the Dukes Invitational Softball Tournament at James Madison University. Jaworski’s game-winning shot to left-center field secured JMU’s second victory on the afternoon, as the Dukes beat Binghamton 9-2 in Game 3 of the tournament. Freshman Lauren Haney’s two-out single through the right side of the infield scored freshman Whitney Schenbeck from third base in the 7th inning to give the Mountain Hawks their lone run of the game and force the extra inning. A solo home run to left field off the bat of freshman Katie George gave JMU a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Haney was the only Mountain Hawk to tally two hits in addition to her bottom of the seventh inning RBI. Freshman Heather Hamasaki suffered the loss for Lehigh, tossing 7.1 innings, striking out nine and allowing one earned run. Ling relieved Hamasaki in the eighth and gave up Jaworski’s home run. The Mountain Hawks return to action tomorrow in the same tournament, with a 1-1 record and will open play versus Binghamton at 9:00 am. Following the opening round games, the top seed will play the fourth seed, and the number two and three seeds will square off with the championship game scheduled to begin at approximately 2:30.
