Virginia Beach, VA – The Mountain Hawks continue to get it done in the late innings, using rallies twice on Friday to take two victories at the Dixie Classic. In the first game against George Mason, Lehigh scored in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-5.  In the second game, the Mountain Hawks pushed across four runs in the 8th inning to take a 5-1 victory over Liberty.

The drama started in the first game, as Lehigh came into the bottom of the seventh tied with George Mason at 5 apiece. But Shana Treon led off the inning with a double, and then moved over to third on a sacrifice.  With two outs, Kelly Kliewer hit a walk-off single, scoring Treon to win the game. Heather Hamasaki pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to get the win, her first in a Mountain Hawk uniform. Jessica Young was the hitting start in the game, going 2-4 and driving in a pair.

In the second game, a pitchers duel took the game into the 8th tied 1-1.  But Lehigh broke through, as Mendy Martin broke it open with a bases-loaded double to put the team in front.  Then, Treon came up and smacked a triple to drive in two more, giving the Mountain Hawks a little insurance.  Kate Arico (2-0) shut down Liberty in the bottom of the inning to give Lehigh the win.

Arico pitched phenomenally, going the distance and allowing only one run on 5 hits.  She also struck out 4 batters.  Freshman Julie Sterret went 2-4 with an RBI in the game, Treon was 1-2 with a 3B and 2 RBIs.

Head Coach Fran Troyan spoke after the game about his team’s performance in the late innings. “They are showing they have resilience,” said Troyan. “It’s a credit to them, they don’t get rattled and they find a way to come back.”

Lehigh continues in the Dixie Classic on Saturday, taking on Radford at 9:00am and Norfolk State at 11:00.
