Bethlehem, PA - Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer has announced that the Mountain Hawks have selected Mel Lepko, Meghan Gove and Marissa Iannarone as captains for the 2005 season.  All three will be seniors next year and Lepko will be in her second season serving in this capacity.  “The team and coaches are on the same page and believe that the 2005 captains will help us to take the next step in the development of our program,” explains Mazer, who will enter her third season in 2005 after leading the Mountain Hawks to their first appearance in the Patriot League Tournament since 1996.

Mazer is excited to have each of these three players back for another season and to have such great student-athletes leading the team in 2005.  Lepko started all 19 games for Lehigh this past season on the defensive end and helped to spearhead a defense that shut out three opponents in 2004, including Robert Morris, who the Mountain Hawks defeated 9-0 in the largest shutout victory in school history.  “Mel learned a great deal as a junior captain this past season which will help her be even more effective as a leader through the off season and into next year.  She is a true competitor and will make any sacrifice necessary for her teammates.  She will be the backbone of our defense next year and we expect big things from her.”

Gove split time in the cage in 2004 with senior Jeanine Hoff and was solid throughout the course of the year.  She saw time in 13 games, making five starts and registered a goals against average of 2.42, while sending back 56 shots on the season.  She also posted a save percentage of .747 and recorded one shutout.  Meghan Gove is a natural leader,” explains Mazer.  “She really took our large freshmen class under her wing this past season and helped to teach them what our program wants to be about.  She is gutsy and determined and possesses all of the qualities of an effective leader.  I think her senior year will be her best yet as a Mountain Hawk.”

Iannarone started all 19 games for the Mountain Hawks as a junior, posting five goals, which tied for third best on the team, as well as handing out a team best eight assists.  The New Jersey native also registered 18 points, good for second on the team and unleashed 17 shots on goal, good for third on the squad.  Mazer offers her thoughts on the finance major:  “Marissa brings a great deal of enthusiasm and positive energy to our program.  She believes in her teammates and helps to bring the best out in them.  She is completely dedicated to taking her game to the next level and will be a leader on our offense as a senior.”

Following a very successful season in 2004, Lehigh is ready to look ahead to 2005 and Mazer is excited to get to work with the team.  “The strength of the entire senior class as a whole is going to be extraordinary.  We will have seven strong seniors on the field next year who have set their goals high and plan to make a major impact on our program.   As a class they have a great deal of experience and we will rely on all of them for their leadership and ability to make our team better.”
