10/6/2004 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh used an onslaught of offense to defeat the UMBC Retrievers on Wednesday evening by a score of 6-1 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Lehigh received goals from five different players and outshot its opponent 26-4 on the evening.  With the win the Mountain Hawks improve to 6-6 on the season, while the Retrievers fall to 4-8.

Lehigh got on the board first when Jen Schmeltze scored the first of her two goals on the evening at the 15:53 mark off of a pass from junior Marissa Iannarone.  Maureen Harrington then scored a goal of her own off of a rebound at the 22:31 mark to put the Mountain Hawks in front 2-0.  Schmeltze and Iannarone then hooked up again at the 27:34 mark and Lehigh was in front by a trio of goals.

Iannarone then got into the scoring act netting a goal of her own at the 29:36 clip and the home team was in front 4-0.  Sophomore Moira Garrity found the back of the net off of a nifty spinning move in the circle at the 31:49 mark and the Mountain Hawks took their 5-0 lead into halftime.

Junior Mary Beth Kuenne blasted a shot from the top of the circle off of a corner at the 54:17 mark and Lehigh was in front by a commanding 6-0 score.  UMBC finally got on the board at the 65:20 mark when Cecile Banas fed Kristi Troster off of a corner and the Retrievers were down 6-1.

Lehigh had 12 corners on the evening compared to UMBC’s three, while in goal for the Mountain Hawks senior Jeanine Hoff stopped one shot to pick up the win.  Retriever starting goalie Meghan Polek sent back an amazing 16 Mountain Hawk shots, while backup Ashley Benitez did not stop any shots on the day.

“We talked about opportunities and taking advantage of them when they are presented to us,” said a pleased head coach Julie Mazer after the game.  “We’ve been working on our corners a lot and it showed tonight.  Jen (Schmeltze) really hit the ball nice tonight, which is something she’s been working on too.”  Mazer continues, “We played loose out there tonight, played relaxed.  We talked about passing and not dribbling through double teams.”

Mazer continues, “We were also able to play a lot of freshmen too, which is great experience for them.  This game prepared us well for Saturday.  We’re going to come out and play relaxed and play organized.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks play host to nationally ranked American from the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for 1:00 and all of the action can be heard live on Lehigh’s website at lehighsports.com.
