Lehigh defeats Lafayette 4-2, qualifies for tournament

10/27/2004 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh honored its five seniors on Wednesday evening, but it was a freshman that stole the show, as Christine Smith scored two goals in leading the Mountain Hawks to a 4-2 win over archrival Lafayette sending the Brown and White into the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 1996.  With the win, Lehigh improves to 9-9 on the season, 2-3 in Patriot League play, while Lafayette falls to 4-12 overall and 1-4 in league action.

Lehigh came out fired up on Wednesday evening, but Lafayette quickly seized the momentum as Maggie DeFilippo scored off an assist from Virginia Satterthwaite at the 5:57 mark to go ahead 1-0.  The Mountain Hawks would fight back however, as Smith scored an unassisted goal at the 14:13 mark to even the match at one.

Junior Mary Beth Kuenne then blasted her ninth goal of the season past the Lafayette keeper off of a penalty corner on assists from Krista Jamieson and Kristi Miller and the Mountain Hawks were in front 2-1 with 17 minutes remaining in the half.  Lafayette would break the Mountain Hawks hearts momentarily however, when Missy Farrand scored with just 13 seconds to go in the half off of an assist from Amanda Eggleston to send the game into halftime tied at two.

The two teams would battle tightly in the second stanza, with neither squad able to score in the first 13 minutes.  That would all change though when junior Maureen Harrington took a pass from Kuenne off of a penalty corner at the 48:00 minute mark and snuck it in the back of the net to put Lehigh in front 3-2.  Smith would then seal the game as the dazzling freshman scored her second goal of the evening unassisted with 14 minutes left in the contest.

Senior Jeanine Hoff was brilliant in the cage for Lehigh all evening stopping ten Lafayette shots in 70 minutes of action.  Lafayette goal keeper Jill Lambert sent back four Mountain Hawk shots of her own, on a night that saw Lehigh outshoot its archrival 18-16.  Lehigh also dominated the penalty corners with 11, compared to the Leopards nine.  Kuenne led Lehigh with six shots on the night, while three different Lafayette players got off three shots.

“We worked so hard this season to put ourselves in this position and all of our hard work paid off tonight,” said an elated Julie Mazer after the game.  “The girls have been working for this all season and it’s just very gratifying to see them rewarded for their dedication.”

Lehigh will be back in action on Saturday, November 6 when the Mountain Hawks play top-seeded American in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament at 11 am.  The tournament will be hosted in Hamilton, New York by Colgate University.  All of the Mountain Hawks postseason games will be broadcast live on Lehigh’s website at lehighsports.com.
