Fall season a success for Mountain Hawks

Bethlehem, PA - Lehigh recently completed its 2004 fall season and head coach Chris Wakely and the Mountain Hawks are very pleased with the results they saw on the field.  Practice began back on September 6 and went every week Monday thru Friday, with the season ending last weekend following a pair of scrimmages versus Villanova and Fairfield.  Lehigh implemented speed training with its workouts this fall and the results made the Mountain Hawks much more explosive in the two scrimmages.

Wakely and his staff had several goals for the fall and pushed the team very hard in practice to achieve each one of them.  “Our Intent this fall season was to build confidence in a growing program, while implementing foundations of our offensive and defensive systems, and increase the level of competitiveness in our practice sessions” Wakely explains.  “We also wanted to establish a core set of values that will serve as valuable life skills for our student-athletes.”

Following the six week fall season Wakely now has a much better feel for the type of team the Mountain Hawks will put out on the field come spring.  He explains, “The fall was a success on all levels.  Everyone involved in the program, from parents to players and coaches are very happy with the effort and level of play.”

Wakely continues, “Both scrimmages were successful and revealed that we are young and skilled, with great senior leadership on offense, and we are big and athletic on defense.  There were many moments of success in both scrimmages and we were most happy with our level of intensity.  It was difficult to play a game, and then have to sit for two hours only to come back and play another game; but the team responded well and jumped out to an early lead against Fairfield.”

Wakley went on to say, “In the scrimmage versus Villanova we saw some very good things out there as well, particularly the success of facing off with Tom Weiss, Michael Tabb, Robert Shrader and Greg Furst.  The captains also had a solid game, establishing the tone in their respective areas, with (Andrew) Lucas doing it on offense, and (Jeff) King) getting it done on the defensive side of things.  The day proved that our system is effective and we have the right kind of character in our program to make this year very special.”

This upcoming weekend will feature an assortment of events for the Lehigh lacrosse program.  On Saturday morning, the annual Lehigh Lacrosse Alumni Game will take place at the Ronald J. Ulrich turf field.  The game will begin at 9:30 and should last approximately one hour.  Later in the day, the 1999 Patriot League Championship team will be back for a reunion, which is in conjunction with young alumni reunion weekend.
