Lehigh falls in tough battle

Philadelphia, PA- In an exciting match in front of 1,465 wrestling fans at the Palestra, eighth ranked Penn defeated 12th ranked Lehigh 21-12 to gain the upper hand in the renewed series 4-3. Lehigh continues to lead the overall series 32-7-2. After dropping the first four bouts, Lehigh’s Rob Rohn sparked an attempt at a comeback. After Rohn’s win at 184, Lehigh went onto take the next four bouts. However the Quakers won the last two bouts securing the win. Lehigh drops its first dual in the EIWA and now stands at 6-1 and 13-6 overall. Penn improves to 5-0 in the EIWA and 10-4 overall.
Mike Pirozzola returned to the mat for the first time since suffering a rib injury versus Oklahoma at National Duals. At 149, Pirozzola scored one point on an escape before being taken down three times by tenth ranked Joe Henson. Henson scored the first points of the match with an 8-1 decision. Before the injury Pirozzola stood at 10-6.
At 157, Warren Stout kept second ranked Yoshi Nakamura scoreless in the first period. Nakamura escaped at the beginning of the second period and scored a takedown at the end of the period to go up 3-0. Nakamura took control of the third and the bout recording a 10-4 decision.
In an offensive battle at 165 Chris Vitale dropped his first bout this season in a dual match. Fourth ranked Vitale dropped a 9-5 decision to eighth ranked Josh Henson. Vitale still has an impressive 20-2 record despite the loss.
At 174 Brad Dillon suffered a knee injury late in the second period. Springman twisted Dillon’s knee attempting to take him down. The injury default put the Quakers up 15-0.
Fourth ranked Rob Rohn recorded a 7-4 decision over Marcus Schontube, giving Lehigh its first points of the afternoon. Rohn tabbed a reversal and a two point near fall in the third period to secure the win.
At 197, second ranked Jon Trenge recorded a 7-4 decision over Mike Faust to give the Brown and White six. Trenge, now an amazing 25-3, has not lost a bout in eight duals.
After sitting out yesterday’s dual against NC State, Shawn Laughlin recorded Lehigh’s third consecutive win over 14th ranked Matt Feast. In an exciting overtime bout that had the crowd on its feet Laughlin did not allow Feast to escape and gave his team three more points.
In a rematch from last season Mario Stuart recorded a 9-6 decision over 11th ranked Mason Lenhard at 125. Coming out quick Stuart recorded a reversal and almost pinned Lenhard, tabbing two back points, in the first period. Stuart kept on the offensive and recorded the win. This is the first time in four meeting that Stuart has defeated Lenhard.
With a unison chant of, "Go Lehigh" in the background Dan Hyman recorded a takedown and an escape in the third period to tie the score at four. However Hyman was unable to hang on in the overtime session and dropped a 6-4 decision to Jeff Eveleth.
In the final bout of the afternoon Tristan Boyd dropped a 3-5 decision to Brett Vanderveer to secure the win for the Quakers.
Lehigh will travel down the road to face Drexel this evening at 5:00.
