Bethlehem, PA- Lehigh completed its 2002 season Wednesday evening, November 6th with a loss to Pennsylvania.
First year head coach Manny Oudin guided the team to a 4-13-1 overall record, 1-5-1 in Patriot League play. It was a season that opened a bright note. Lehigh began the season with a 1-1 record following a 1-0 shutout victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The shutout was the first of three for sophomore goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz. The Mountain Hawks dropped three consecutive contests to Villanova, Pittsburgh, and Delaware before rebounding to win three of their next five games, including a win over archrival Lafayette.
Following the Lafayette win, the Patriot League honored a pair of Mountain Hawks. Sophomore Jocelyn Helwig was selected as the league’s top offensive player, having scored the game-winning goal, while Iwaskiewicz was honored as the league’s top defensive player.
With Patriot League play underway the Mountain Hawks stood atop the league with a 1-0 record. Unfortunately for Lehigh, the Lafayette win would be the squad’s last win of 2002. Lehigh continued to battle, however, the squad dropped seven of its final eight games, including a 0-0 double overtime tie with Bucknell.
Lehigh struggled offensively after the Lafayette game. Prior to Lafayette, the Mountain Hawks had scored six goals, two of which came off the foot of senior Lauren Day. Since the Lafayette match Lehigh scored only one goal, and ended the season having not scored a goal in 499:22, a span stretching back to Adrienne Grunwald’s goal vs. Columbia on October 11.
One final award was handed out by the Patriot League honoring a Lehigh player. The league’s coaches voted Erin Iwaskiewicz as the first team goalkeeper on the All-League team.
"It’s great to know that Erin has been honored by the league," said head coach Manny Oudin. "Although we didn’t achieve the success that we desired, she is very deserving of the award and has been our most consistent performer this year. She has faced a tremendous amount of shots and has played very well in net. It’s also very nice to see that the coaches league wide recognize her efforts."
Lehigh graduates a slew of seniors, but return a talented score in 2003 including Iwaskiewicz, Helwig, Grunwald, Hedy Kishel, Lauren May, and Lauren Kriete.
