Lehigh falls to Bucknell

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (5-9, 2-4 Patriot League) concluded its 2003 men’s lacrosse season with a 15-5 loss to No. 20 Bucknell (9-4, 5-1 Patriot League) on Saturday evening. Prior to the contest, the Mountain Hawks honored their four seniors: Tony Lowe, Scott Carpenter, Bill Guglielmo, and Grant Wasch. Scoring
Lowe, the nation’s second best scorer in terms of goals per game, turned in four in his final contest. Carpenter led all players with nine ground balls and Guglielmo played the entire contest, making 14 saves.
Lehigh fell behind early, as the Bison jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second quarter, before freshman Jeff Weiner found Lowe to get the Mountain Hawks on the board. That would be as close as Lehigh could get, as Bucknell led 7-2 at the half. In the third quarter, each scored only once, with Lehigh’s goal coming on a spectacular assist by junior Mike Titus, setting up Lowe for his second goal of the game. In the fourth period, the Bison outscored the Mountain Hawks 7-2 to put the game away. Lowe scored both Lehigh goals.
Titus was the only player for Lehigh other than Lowe to score a goal, netting Lehigh’s second goal. He also added an assist for two points, and sophomore Greg Morin and Weiner added assists as well. Freshman Stephen Nye added seven ground balls and classmate Tom Weiss had six.
"The seniors played their hearts out, like they have all four years," head coach Chris Wakely said. "We put out a good effort, but Bucknell is a good team and they showed that tonight."
For the Bison, Kelly Hogue scored five goals and added a pair of assists to go along with a team high seven ground balls. Patrick Christensen scored three goals and Worthy Sanders and Craig Fleishman each found the back of the cage twice. Justin Sussman started in cage and played the first 57:30, surrendering only four goals and making 13 saves.
The win gave Bucknell at least a share of the Patriot League title. If Army wins its remaining league contest, the Black Knights will finish at 5-1, as well. Army won the head-to-head match up, meaning the Black Knights would receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
