Bethlehem, PA – Senior Tony Lowe turned in his second consecutive seven goal performance as Lehigh (5-8, 2-3 Patriot League) snapped its four game losing streak, defeating Lafayette (1-10, 0-5 Patriot League) 12-8 on Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks’ defense also turned in a strong effort, holding the Leopards scoreless for the final 24:43 of the contest. Lafayette jumped out to an early 4-1, before Lowe’s second goal and a score from freshman Jeff Weiner in the final minute of the first period cut the lead to 4-3. Lowe scored the opening goal of the second period and sophomore Greg Morin followed that with a goal of his own to put Lehigh ahead 5-4. Three Lafayette goals took the lead away from the Mountain Hawks and Lehigh trailed 7-5 at halftime. Junior Mike Titus cut the lead to one with his only goal of the game, before Lafayette’s Pat Lennon scored his fifth goal of the game to push the lead back to two. That would be all for the Leopard offense, as Lehigh’s defense stepped up its efforts. Lowe scored the game’s next three goals and the Mountain Hawks scored the game’s final six to cruise to the 12-8 win. Lowe scored the game-tying goal after a vicious hit by freshman Connor McCarthy on Brett Chalanick. Lowe poured in seven goals on 11 shots to lead the Lehigh offense. Five other Mountain Hawks scored one goal apiece, including Morin who added three assists. Freshman Tom Weiss led Lehigh with nine ground balls, while senior Scott Carpenter and freshman Jeff King had eight and seven, respectively. Weiss also won 15-of-21 face-offs. Senior Bill Gugliemo picked up the start in cage for the Mountain Hawks, playing the first 13:32. Sophomore Tom Ellis replaced him, playing the final 46:28, allowing four goals and making five saves. "Our defense really played well in the second half and picked us up," head coach Chris Wakely said. "The turning point came on the hit by McCarthy. That’s when we tied the game and the momentum swung in our favor." Lennon scored five goals for the Leopards and added an assist. Goalkeeper Michael Koch had six ground balls and made ten saves in the loss. The Mountain Hawks are in action again next Saturday, when they host Bucknell in the season finale at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:00. Scoring
