Mountain Hawks bedeviled by Duke

Durham, NC – Despite two goals apiece from senior Tony Lowe and freshman Connor McCarthy and an early 1-0 lead, Lehigh (3-2) fell at No. 8 Duke (5-1) on Tuesday by a final of 17-6. Things started out well for the Mountain Hawks, who took an early 1-0 lead when a pair of sophomores connected on the game's first score. Andrew Lucas gave Lehigh its only lead of the day after a feed from Greg Morin. The Mountain Hawks hung with the No. 8 team in the nation early, trailing just 3-2 after one period, and 8-5 at halftime. The Blue Devils would break the game open in the second half, holding Lehigh to just a single score, while putting nine of their own goals on the board. Lowe would score his second goal of the game at the 11:22 mark of the third period with an assist from sophomore Mike McConnell, who assisted on both Lowe scores, for the Mountain Hawks' lone goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Tom Ellis played the entire game in goal for Lehigh, making 12 saves. Freshman Jeff King scooped up six ground balls to pace the Brown & White in that department. Filling in on face offs, junior Jeff Hoelderlin was 3-5. Kevin Cassese led the Duke offense, beating the Mountain Hawk defense five times, while helping on two more goals. Also scoring multiple goals for the Blue Devils were Matt Monfett, Kevin Brennan, Mack Hardaker, and Ben Fenton. Matt Rewkowski led Duke with three assists. AJ Kincel played the first 54:00 minutes in goal for the Blue Devils, making seven saves. Will MacDonald took all 25 face offs for Duke, winning 18. Lehigh looks to bounce back on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks take on Dartmouth in a game at the Haverford School in Philadelphia. Game time is set for 1:30.
