Lehigh whips Wagner

Bethlehem, PA – Sophomore Andrew Lucas scored four first half goals as Lehigh (2-1) cruised to a 13-4 win over Wagner (0-1)on Tuesday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks would go into halftime leading 8-0 and would extend the lead to 9-0, before the Seahawks finally got on the board. Lucas scored three consecutive goals at the end of the first period and start of the second to power the Lehigh attack in the opening 30 minutes. Freshman Jeff King would add his third and fourth career goals in the half as well. The Mountain Hawk defense stifled the Seahawks, and surrendered just one shot in the first period and two in the second. Sophomore Tom Ellis played the first two periods in goal, and needed only one save as Lehigh held Wagner in check. Freshman Mike Moran would score his first collegiate goal to open the second half, before Wagner took advantage of an extra man opportunity against senior goalkeeper Bill Gugliemo. Senior Tony Lowe would answer back with an extra man goal of his own, and would add another extra man score in the fourth period on his way to three goals on the afternoon. Gugliemo played the second half in goal for Lehigh stopping five shots and surrendering all four Wagner scores. The Mountain Hawks showed some depth in the contest, playing 29 players, six of whom picked up at least three ground balls. The high assist men on the day for Lehigh were sophomore Greg Morin with four and freshman Mike Osborne with two. "We came out strong after a tough loss to Villanova," head coach Chris Wakely said. "We did some things very well, but there is still work to do." The Mountain Hawks took the advantage in every statistical category. They out shot Wagner 32-17, and doubled them in ground balls 40-20. Lehigh won 17 of the game’s 21 face offs, with freshman Tom Weiss winning nine of 12. The Mountain Hawks also went 2-3 on extra man opportunities. Pacing the Seahawks was Tom Marchetti, who scored two of Wagner’s four goals. Goalkeeper Phil Mackenzie played the entire game, making 10 saves while allowing 13 goals. Mackenzie also led Seahawks with five ground balls. Lehigh returns to action when the team travels to Lexington, Virginia to face VMI on Saturday.
