Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (1-0) opened its season with a 13-8 victory over Marist (0-2) on Monday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Tony Lowe scored five goals in the game, including the game winner.

The Mountain Hawks fell behind 3-1 early in the second period, but would score the next eight straight to take command of the game. Lowe would score four of his goals during the stretch, and freshman Jeff King added both of his scores as well, which were the first of his career. Sophomore Andrew Lucas also scored two goals and freshman Connor McCarthy matched him with the first two of his career. A third freshman, Mike Osborne was Lehigh’s lone player with multiple assists, helping on five of the Mountain Hawks 13 scores.

Sophomore Tom Ellis was strong in goal, making 12 saves, while holding the Red Foxes to eight goals. Freshman midfielder Tom Weiss picked up seven ground balls and won 19-23 face offs. Senior defender Scott Carpenter led the Mountain Hawks with nine ground balls, and sophomore Mike Norelli added eight.

"There were some tense moments," head coach Chris Wakely said. "But, I think we handled them well. We have a young team, and it’s been difficult since the weather hasn’t allowed us to get much work outdoors."

Brian Diele scored half of Marist’s eight goals and was the only Red Fox to score more than once. Freshman Bobby Gross allowed all 13 scores and made 18 saves in the losing effort.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Villanova. Game time is set for 1:00.
