Lehigh sets school record for league wins

West Point, NY – Lehigh (12-11, 9-2 Patriot League) set a school record for league victories in a season with nine, as the Mountain Hawks defeated Army (12-13, 4-7 Patriot League) by a final of 62-51 on Friday evening. The nine Patriot League victories betters the previous Lehigh mark of eight set last season. Lehigh used a 12-2 first half run to enter the intermission with a 30–22 lead. Senior forward Anne Tierney nearly matched her per game averages in the first 20 minutes, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Jessica DePalo added nine first half points for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh forced a dozen Black Knight turnovers in the first half and held the Patriot League’s third leading scorer junior Katie Macfarlane to only a pair of field goals. The second half saw the two teams trade runs. Army cut the lead to two in the first 1:30 of the second half with three quick buckets, before a Tierney jumper started an 8-0 run. Freshman Dawn Gorynski scored five of her 12 second half points points during the stretch. The Black Knights would then outscore the Mountain Hawks 13-2 to take a 47-45 lead. Tierney tied the score with 5:40 to play and Gorynski followed with a three pointer to give Lehigh a 50-47 lead. The Mountain Hawks closed the game by outscoring the Black Knights 17-4 over that final 5:40 to take home the 62-51 victory. Tierney finished with another double-double, her tenth of the season and 53rd of her career, as she scored 19 points and pulled down 16 boards. Both numbers were game highs. Gorynski scored 18 points of her own, including three three pointers, and DePalo was the third Lehigh player in double figures, scoring 13. Senior Amy Saal was a perfect 8-8 from the floor to pace the Black Knights with 17 points. Lehigh was able to frustrate Macfarlane, holding Army’s leading scorer to just 5-14 from the field, although the forward did match Tierney with a double-double, scoring 11 points to go with her team best 14 boards. "It was a great offensive game for us," head coach Sue Troyan said. "Anne was a rock, whenever we needed a basket, we just went to her and she got it done. Dawn played a good floor game as the point guard, as well. Our forwards did a terrific job against Macfarlane. She’s very tough, but we were able to hold her in check." The Mountain Hawks take the court again on Sunday, when they make the trip to Easton to play rival Lafayette. Tip off is set for 1:07 and the game will be televised live on WBPH 60 and can be heard on WLVR 91.3 FM. Scoring
